First Baptist Church

This rectangular brick structure has its principal three-bay facade in the gable end. The front facade consists of two equally-spaced doorways separated by a window. The doors and a stained glass transom are enclosed in a Gothic arc hood molding made of brick. Building cornice has brick corbelling.

Organized by white Baptists of South District during the 1840s as an African Baptist Church. This Property is on the African-American History Tour. The small brick building served as a house of worship and a school. One of the first pastors changed the name to First Baptist Church. A new church by that name organized in 1897. The present sanctuary was built in 1873; annexes were added in 1915 and 1983.
